BESOMS & STAFFSBesoms & BroomsThe witches broom (or besom) represents both the Goddess and God. The staff or handle is considered masculine, while the brush or broom part is considered feminine. This uniting and balancing of polarities makes the besom a natural choice for Handfasting rites. Brooms also represent purification, protection, fertility and prosperity. The broom can be used to sweep a sacred space before performing a ritual. This is more of a purification activity than a physical cleaning. Wiccans usually visualize all the negativity being swept out of the ritual area and the broom usually does not touch the ground. The circle should be thoroughly cleaned physically prior to using your besom to cleanse ritually. The broom also can be placed across the threshold and will halt spells sent to the house or those within. Brooms are used to guard a home and all that dwell in it by laying the broom across the doorway, under the bed, on windowsills, or on doors. Staffs Like the famous wizards of long ago, the staff has always been a symbol of power and wisdom. Known by its length and character, each staff is unique, like its owner. Staffs can double as wands and walking sticks. Carved with runes or sacred symbols, anointed with oils, or wrapped with ribbons of festive color, each staff can become a unique and personalized tool in any ceremony.
